Category:
Personalization
Price:
free
Developer:
Link:
Tested Version:
1.0.3
Requires Android:
2.3+
PROsCONs
  • nice 3D visuals
  • swipe effects

3DVolcanoLiveWallpaperFREE1

Description:

3D Volcano Live Wallpaper FREE is a simple live wallpaper app. It shows a scene with an erupting volcano island viewed from the surface of an animated ocean.

3DVolcanoLiveWallpaperFREE2

Features:

  • Water animation when home screen is changed by swiping left or right
  • Two choosable designs (skies)
  • Optional automatic sky changing with configurable time interval

Opinion:

This live wallpaper is well done. The resolution is sufficiently high and especially the water animation looks natural. An alternative design rounds the free version out. Additional designs and more options are available in the paid full version.

Ideas for further improvement: The volcano appears a bit too edged at some points. Furthermore, a dynamic sky box would be nice.

Android L, SELinux and Root Apps

Last modified on 13. Nov 2014 at 01:03

With the official announcement of Android L during the keynote of the Google I/O conference on June 25 and the release of a developer preview the day after, long-foreseen restrictions for root apps became more real.

Note: This article is intended for developers only. The Android L developer preview is also only intended for developers. The information in this article is provided „as-is“ without any guarantees. Use it at your own risk and only use it if you know what you are doing.

Please check Additions for recent additions to this article.

About Android L and SELinux

The developer preview of Android L hints at which restrictions for root apps, mainly with regard to SELinux, can be expected in future. Chainfire provides a very helpful, developer-aimed explanation of the impact of SELinux and thus I won’t dive into more details here. Fact is: most root apps don’t work on the Android L developer preview. At least, not yet. Development of root apps becomes more difficult. As a developer of a root app myself, I’m highly interested in understanding the reasons and fixing them as soon as possible. The restrictions present in the developer preview will most-likely be included in the official release of Android L and later versions. Further restrictions must be expected. Thus, even although the results I describe in this article show that superuser access can still be achieved (at least for some apps) it’s very well possible that these methods won’t work in a few months. App Review: Arithma

Category:
Puzzle
Price:
free
Developer:
Link:
Tested Version:
1.0
Requires Android:
2.3+
PROsCONs
  • increasing difficulty
  • simple and nice design
Arithma1
Arithma2

Description:

The idea behind Arithma is simple: Combine numbers using basic arithmetic operations to reach a target value. With an increasing difficulty this game challenges your math skills while you have to solve the problems against the time.

Features:

  • four basic arithmetic operations can be used to combine numbers
  • increasing difficulty

Opinion:

Arithma is a nice and challenging maths puzzle. The increasing difficulty together with the timeout is an incentive to continue playing it. However, it’d be nice to show an example solution when the user runs out of time.

App Review: WifiBook

Category:
Tools
Price:
free
Developer:
Link:
Tested Version:
1.3
Requires Android:
2.1+
PROsCONs
  • Simple one-click usage
  • Auto-start after boot
  • Sometimes just stops working
wifibook1
wifibook2

Description:

This app aims to reduce the battery usage by toggling Wi-Fi depending on the available networks. WifiBook periodically checks the networks in range and switches Wi-Fi off if there are no familiar networks available or keeps it on if a familiar network is recognized.

Features:

  • Single button to toggle the service on and off
  • Automatically launch after boot
  • Configurable scanning interval

Opinion:

The app successfully detects when I’m leaving and reentering the range of my familiar Wi-Fi networks and acts accordingly. However, after some time it stopped working (the notification vanished) and had to be restarted manually.

App Review: Diary Notebook Free

Category:
Productivity
Price:
free
Developer:
Link:
Tested Version:
1.164
Requires Android:
4.0+
PROsCONs
  • easy to use
  • combines text with images
  • support for multiple diaries
  • nice card layout
diarynotebookscreen2
diarynotebookscreen1

Description:

Diary Notebook Free is a simple multi-diary app. Each diary displays its entries using excerpts in a chronologically sorted card-style list. The entries consist of a title and content text. Additionally, images can be attached and will be shown at the top of the entry. The user can swipe left and right to cycle through the entries in one diary or through the images of an entry.

Features:

  • Create multiple diaries, e.g., personal or work-related, diaries
  • Add images to diary entries
  • Swipe gestures to quickly go through all entries in one diary

Opinion:

The app does it job right. It’s not overfilled with features, e.g., for text formatting, but allows simple plain text entries which can be accompanied by images. Support for multiple diaries and a modern card-based layout round the app off. My suggestions for future versions: attach videos to diary entries, small layout improvements, e.g., icons for the edit action or the „New Diary“ option, rename diaries.

Free Android App Review Service Launched

Today, I launched a free review service for Android™ apps. Visit the app review page for more details including the rules and information on how you can submit your app.

This service is mainly intended for independent developers who publish their first apps and would like to have them reviewed. Although there exist a lot of blogs, etc. which offer similar free (or paid) review services especially new developers might have difficulties to get their apps reviewed. I hope to help at least a few developers with this service.

Currently, I plan to release about one review per week. Thus, depending on the amount of submissions, please note that I might be unable to review all submissions.
